To become a referee:

1. Sign up. Sign up for a class to become a certified referee. You need to sign up for a “grade 9” entry course. A list of classes can be found here: http://www.michiganreferee.org/entry_9.html. Once certified, you must rectify annually.
2. Complete Risk Management. All officials 18 years of age or older are required to have a current risk management certificate. For more information, see: http://www.michiganreferee.org/risk_management.html. All questions regarding risk management should be directed to the state office.
3. Notify GLASRA. Email Steve Zayko, the GLASRA Membership Coordinator, that you are interested in receiving Lansing area assignments from GLASRA.

4. Work Permit if under 18. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to complete a State of Michigan Work Permit. To request a work permit form, please email the Membership Coordinator Steve Zayko at: steve.zayko@yahoo.com.
5. Pay dues. Annual dues must be paid to GLASRA. For more information on paying dues, check out the membership tab.
6. ArbiterSports. Once your referee certification and membership have been finalized, you should receive an invite to join arbitersports.com. Arbitersports.com is GLASRA’s communication and assigning software. Referees that have marked themselves ready and active through arbitersports.com will be eligible to receive assignments through GLASRA. Referees must accept or decline all assignments through arbitersports.com in a timely fashion.

Recertification:

Bridge Classes - This class is for grade 9 Recreational Referees who want to upgrade to grade 8.  Bridge classes include 8 hours of instruction, usually over two sessions. For information on taking classes to upgrade to a grade 8 referee, see: http://michiganreferee.org.

Recertification Classes - These classes are required every year to maintain your current referee grade. This class focuses on specific aspects of the game and provides updates to the Laws of the Game. High School Certification

To become a high school referee, it is recommended that you be a grade 8 referee with several years of experience as a certified referee. High school assignments require that officials be willing to travel to assignments more than 40 miles from their home. Additionally, preference will be given to officials that are ranked as a grade 7 referee or better. Most top divisions and post-season assignments are reserved for state referees, national referees or collegiate officials.

1. To become a high school referee, a separate registration must be completed and an annual fee paid to the Michigan High School Athletic Assocation (MHSAA). Contact the MHSAA for registration information (a late fee is assessed for failing to re-register before July).

2. Once registered, you will need to submit dues (if you have not already) and contact the high school assignor by email at: joe.gazda@gmail.com

- Your current USSF grade (if applicable) and how long you have been certified with USSF
- You collegiate or professional experience as a player, coach or referee and at what division (if applicable)
- A list of any previous assignors and their contact information (if applicable)
