Angela Ianni of Okemos has been invited to attend the Nike Referee Academy to be held in Los Angeles, Ca. September 20-23, as part of the U. S. Soccer's Nike Friendlies annual competition. Thirty two of the nation's best women's youth soccer teams in the U-16 to U-18 age groups are invited to compete along with the US Women's U-15 and U-17 national teams. Twelve women referees from the four national regions were invited, along with 16 local men and women. Academy students will be officiating the various Friendlies matches. The purpose of the academy is to identify and develop referees for advancement. Five National instructors/assessors will be teaching the academy and evaluating student performance after each match. The participants were selected based on their fitness test scores, experience, and the State Referee Administrator's recommendations. The Academy will cover all student costs.
Angela’s other soccer referee accomplishments include being selected to work Michigan State Cup finals in 2005, 2006, and 2007, being selected to officiate regionals in Wisconsin in 2006 and in Iowa in 2007. Angela was also selected to work the Super-Y League North American Finals in Tampa Fla. in 2006.
Angela, a 2004 graduate of Okemos High School, is a fourth year student at the University of Michigan majoring in biomedical engineering. She just completed an internship with the Merck Corporation, working in the advanced medical imaging area.
"I am grateful and look forward to the opportunity
to work with some of the nation's best soccer officials and instructors at the Nike Academy. I am also grateful to the Greater Lansing Area Soccer Referee’s Association (GLASRA)for the mentoring they have provided me over the years and for the time so many of its senior officials have freely given to help the younger officials. I encourage young soccer
players in the Lansing area to contact GLASRA and look into becoming an official”, Ianni stated.
GLASRA President Scott Goldstein added, “Angela has been an outstanding referee in our organization, and a tremendous role model for our youngest officials. We are all very proud of the accomplishments that Angela has achieved in her officiating career, and wish her nothing but the best of luck in all her future matches.”
